How to make an old pirate treasure map, for real pirates.

We have been doing a project on pirates for the last month! Today Acey designed his own pirate ship and also made a pirate treasure map.....

To make it look all old and piratey he drew the map on watercolor paper with beeswax crayons, and ripped it around the edges to make it look scruffy, because a real pirate treasure map wouldn't be neat! Pirates are NOT neat!! Then he soaked some tea bags in warm water and dripped them all over the paper to stain it. We dried it with a hairdryer and then crumpled the paper up! Now we just need to find the treasure...

Saving badgers and autumn exploring

Last week Acey learned all about badgers. We read an article about them in the Wildlife Watch magazine, and learned about how the government want to cull badgers because of TB. We decided that a much more sensible idea would be for the badgers to be injected against TB instead! Acey made a start on his own badger..

We also went for a lovely autumn walk with our friend Christina around the lanes near our house. We picked some blackberries and saw lots and lots of spiders in the hedgerow wrapping up daddy long legses in their webs ready for their supper!

And we have been enjoying our favorite autumn story 'Woody, Hazel and Little Pip' by Elsa Beskow.

Great wave print

Here are Acey's prints, inspired by the Japanese print artist Katsushika Hokusai. The idea came in this month's Atelier box! It was made by carving a drawing of some waves onto polystyrene, covering it in paint and printing onto a sheet of paper. It was lots of fun!

Being Scilly and other stuff

We have had a lovely holiday at The Isles of Scilly with our bestest David. We had the best time ever - we did lots of sitting on beaches with glittery sand, walking, nature trails, eating, eating and more eating, foraging for rock samphire and blackberries, rock balancing, collecting shells and sea glass, kayaking. Acey also managed to tick off lots of things in his nature book including nettles, blackberries, sandy beach, spiders, lichen, lichen everywhere because the air is so pure, seals, maram grass, sand dunes, dandelions, sparrows, blackbirds, bladderwrack seaweed, sand hoppers... it is our favorite place in the world. :) and there were lots of jellyfish.
